The new plant helps to augment the region's power supply. In February 2000, the Council estimated that 3,000 additional megawatts of new generating resources were needed to re-establish a conventional level of system reliability by winter 2003. Completion of Coyote 2, along with other projects completed from mid-2001 through mid-2002, brings the net total of additional megawatts to 2,630. With the completion of the Chehalis Generating Facility (520 MW), anticipated in September, the region will meet its goal at 3,120 megawatts.
"Coyote Springs is a state of the art power plant that will provide much needed energy to power the Pacific Northwest's economic growth," said Anne Cleary, vice president, Mirant's West region. "Using advanced, environmentally friendly, natural gas technology, it will also help to balance the Northwest's dependence on hydroelectric power."
Mirant produces and sells electricity in North America, the Caribbean, and the Philippines. Avista Corp. is involved in the production, transmission, and distribution of energy as well as other energy-related businesses.
