Information Spectrum

All forms of information will be addressed by CBCIS, from data to synthesized products. The base level of this diagram shows raw data collected by scientists in the field. Often referred to as monitoring data, these data may provide counts of the number of fish that pass through a dam, or measures of water quality. Often these data are collected frequently and contain extensive information, or data bulk (e.g., a huge computer file of numbers and locations may be part of such a data set).

These source data are increasingly synthesized as you move up the diagram. At each level, the data bulk decreases as the product becomes more and more summarized, and the potential audience increases.

A system like CBCIS should help identify, access, analyze and share all forms of data and information. When fully implemented, anyone could access data at any level of the spectrum, including the source data and end products.
