Protecting Western Waters From Invasive Mussels

The Council was briefed by Eileen Ryce, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, on the action plan developed by the Western Regional Panel. The plan's priority actions are on coordination, prevention, early detection/monitoring, rapid response, containment, outreach and education, and research. Quagga and zebra mussels, once established, can cause irreparable ecological damage and long-term mitigation costs in the billions. One of the challenges, said Ryce, is the lack of funding to implement these actions. See video and presentation.
