Protecting Western Waters From Invasive MusselsThe Council was briefed by Eileen Ryce, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, on the action plan developed by the Western Regional Panel. The plan's priority actions are on coordination, prevention, early detection/monitoring, rapid response, containment, outreach and education, and research. Quagga and zebra mussels, once established, can cause irreparable ecological damage and long-term mitigation costs in the billions. One of the challenges, said Ryce, is the lack of funding to implement these actions. See video and presentation. You Can Comment on the Council's Draft 2009 Annual Report to CongressThe Council is requesting comment on its annual draft report to Congress. The report includes a "state of the basin" and overviews of key issues in the fish and wildlife and energy areas. Comments are due by March 1, 2010. The Council is Now Using Twitter!
